EXPERIENCEDuring the early 1800’s, SoHo received its first revival when the rich and prominent moved into the vicinity. By 1825, SoHo had become an exclusive residential neighborhood where the cobblestone streets were lined with four-story townhouses. However, this tranquil existence was short-lived as commercialization soon set in. In the late 1960’s, an influx of young artists and bohemians was lured into SoHo by cheap rents and sprawling loft spaces. Artists such as Chuck Close, Frank Stella, Richard Serra, and Cindy Sherman started another revival of the area with their creativity and energy. Galleries started opening up to feature the artistic works, which lured buyers, trendsetters, and intellects into the area.
By the early 1990’s, the pleasures of SoHo living had been discovered by many, and with the flush of new prosperity came a steady flow of commercial and retail businesses. Today, chic restaurants rub shoulders with contemporary art galleries and trendy boutiques, but the history of Soho remains, giving the neighborhood its unique and distinct character.
