Villa La Massa

This Medici Villa, built in the 16th century by the Landini Family, was subsequently owned by the Rinuccinis and the Homberts and has been home to several aristocratic Italian, English and Russian families.

In 1948 the Villa was transformed into a luxury hotel. Since then, many famous guests have enjoyed a stay at Villa La Massa: Clarke Gable, Winston Churchill, Barbara Hutton, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, just to name a few. More recently, David Bowie and Iman took over the Villa for their wedding.

Since the Villa d’Este Group purchased the hotel in 1999, the whole property has been completely restored thus adding new lustre to the splendid old mansion.

Villa la Massa offers its guests 35 rooms including junior suites and suites, with view of the gardens or of the river Arno. The rooms are decorated in the Renaissance style and feature antique furniture, four-poster beds and buffed terracotta tiles, typical of the Medici period.

Dining at Il Verrocchio restaurant is a unique experience not only for the sumptuous cuisine, but also because of its unique terrace overlooking the Arno. The chef proposes an Italian menu and typical dishes from the renowned Tuscan culinary region. The Villa also boasts an impressive cellar located in the old oil mill, beneath the restaurant. In this charming atmosphere of the old Tuscan Cellars, guest can taste wine with cheeses, hams, and salamis. After dinner, guests can join together at the Bar Mediceo, where the head barman delights by preparing his special drinks.

Among the several activities, the Hotel offers the brand new Fitness Center featuring modern equipment and an outdoor heated swimming pool.

The hotel Villa La Massa stands on the banks of the river Arno, in the Florentine countryside, next to the Chianti Classico, Gallo Nero and Rufina regions, only five miles from the historic centre of Florence. It’s only a few kilometres from the exit “Firenze sud” of the Motorway A1. If you are driving you can take the Motorway A1 (Roma/Milano), exit “Firenze Sud” and follow the directions to Bagno a Ripoli-Pontassieve; once in Candeli, turn left at the traffic light and take Via della Massa. If you are traveling by train the Santa Maria Novella Railway Station (Florence) is only 15 minutes away by car. Otherwise, if you are traveling by air the closest airports are the Vespucci Airport (Firenze-Perentola), which is approximately 30 minutes by car, or the Pisa airport, which is 55 miles far away. For those traveling by boat Livorno harbour is 60 miles away. There is a shuttle at disposal of guests, 7 days a week and free of charge, transporting them from the hotel into Florence, close to Ponte Vecchio.
