Whare Kea Chalet

Located at an altitude of 5,600ft in the Buchanan mountain range beside the Mount Aspiring National Park, Whare Kea Chalet is well suited for a secluded mountain getaway. The chalet has stunning views of various surrounding mountains. In the summer the vista is one of rocky mountains, glaciers and residual snowfields. In the winter, the Chalet lies under a deep blanket of snow.

Sleep soundly under the southern stars secure in the remoteness from the cares of every day life, ready for the adventures the next day brings. With a high pitched ceiling and extensive double glazed windows, the Chalet is no ordinary mountain hut. The overall design concept was to minimize the Chalet's impact on the environment, conceived to maximize breathtaking views.

Guests can enjoy a guided alpine walk followed by a gourmet picnic surrounded by snow fields and alpine meadows. After a glorious day enjoy a glass of champagne in the evening glow, followed by a delicious dinner. Relax after dinner whilst being regaled with tales of adventure from your very own mountain guide.

Activities from the Chalet in summer include, incomparable high mountain walking, particularly to the top of Dragon Fly Peak right behind the Chalet, hunting and for the more adventurous, mountain climbing. In winter and spring the Chalet offers a spectacular base for ski touring.

Access to and from the Chalet is usually via a twenty minute scenic helicopter flight from the Lodge. The Chalet is located in the Buchanan mountain range beside the Mount Aspiring National Park, located in the South Island of New Zealand. The chalet has stunning views from Mount Cook on the north east horizon, to Mount Aspiring to the west.
