The two-floor Thomas Lowton Robins suite has an upstairs entertainment room, with floor-set cushions for watching movies projected to the wall. The stone building was Oxford Prison until ten years ago (the suite, once the governor's office, is named for Robins, boss from 1837 to 1852). Now Mike Warren is General Manager of what is an 87-room hotel - be prepared for unusual standard rooms, each made of 2.5 former cells, with original small doors and very high windows. The basement tiered screening room here has 30 pale blue leather chairs, with holders for your champagne - another level of what were printing presses when this was the headquarters of The Morning Post newspaper in the early 20th century is now a 56-foot pool with underwater music. Of the 105 rooms, suites 410 and 500 come with private gyms. General Manager is Simon Hirst, and the bar is a top nightly cocktail venue for highly successful younger-age executives. The Grand Hotel, Stockholm, SwedenThe owning Wallenberg family have just opened the adjacent Burmanska Palace, so there are now a total of 395 rooms, and the Penthouse suite, on the eighth floor of the Palace, has a sauna and screening room for ten. The Palace is named for banker Axel Burman who built it in 1911 on the site where, at a dinner in 1792, it was decided to assassinate King Gustaf III at a midnight masquerade at the nearby Royal Swedish Opera House. General Manager is Nils Axing. Visit Property Site
The Saxon, Johannesburg, South AfricaThere is a 30-seat theater in this exclusive 27-room hotel, until 1999 the home of owner Douw Steyn, an insurance and car tycoon who invited his good friend Nelson Mandela to stay here while he wrote Long Walk to Freedom. The Mandela and Mbeki Suites remain most popular, but 306, a pale wood confection with open-set bathtub and treetop views, is extremely agreeable. The splendid lush gardens are unusual for a city hotel. General Manager is George Cohen. Visit Property Site
