Two-floor Suites

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Los Angeles, CA, USA
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard loved suite 1200, a rooftop duplex with 1,078 sq ft deck, all now miraculously designed by Dodd Mitchell. Black-painted wood floors complement silver everything, from an eight-seat glass-topped crocodile-skin table to full-length curtains and a stainless freestanding tub. Two bedrooms have conventional beds: the third's is more a 10 x 10 foot stage, to create your own play. GM Brett Blass runs this 300-room hotel, which has a David Hockney-designed outside pool surrounded by Tropicana, one of the city's top night-hot spots.

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
SKY LOFTS at MGM Grand
This 51-room hotel-within-a-hotel is run by the ever-so-English James Hogg. Tony Chi's designs are brilliantly attractive to seekers of romance, girly-groups, mothers and daughters, and all who appreciate open-flowing space, luxurious furnishings, great art and tremendous views through 24-foot windows. The 1,500 sq ft suite 71, nearest to the SkyLoft gym, is stone, beige and black. A three-foot anthropomorphic statue guards the 20 steps up to the bedroom and bathroom, with its Kohler SOK infinity club and steam shower. The hardback reading includes In The Spirit of the Hamptons, Ultimate Style and tomes on Balenciaga and Miro. Coffee mugs are Andy Warhol for Rosenthal.

Hotel Plaza Athenee
Hotel Plaza Athenee, New York, USA
Penthouse suite 1602, a favorite of Princess Diana and Elizabeth Taylor, is a glorious 1,972 sq ft home, with a small covered conservatory. The design has evolved, a pot-pourri of lush patterned fabrics and a variety of shades of the color gold. Downstairs there is a separate dining room, seating eight, and the parlor comes with a chess set on its own table, and the upstairs bedroom is the kind of haven you never want to leave. But you must, as GM Bernard Lackner would really want you to check out the hotel bar, a favorite of George Hamilton and immortalized in Plum Sykes' Bergdorf Blondes ('it feels like a 1930s boudoir. I half expect to see Jean Harlow appear smoking a bright purple Sobranie’.)

Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa
From your rooftop terrace in the 2,120 sq ft Tower Suite 502, you can not only survey the beautiful town of Interlaken below but, in front, the distant snow-capped peaks of the Jungfrau. Think parquet flooring, masses of windows, sunflower and black colors with white highlights, and a table to entertain seven of your friends. You will undoubtedly also want to spend as much time as possible in the spa, which offers both Clarins and Espa treatments. We also love the Olympic-sized Romanesque indoor pool, complete with side columns, and a door flap so you can swim outside as well. MD of the 216-room hotel is Emanuel Berger.

Four Seasons Hotel Milano
The 3,000 sq ft, three-bedroom Royal Suite, designed by Pamela Babey, occupies the entire fifth floor and, connected by private staircase, part of the fourth floor of the 118-room hotel, run by GM Vincenzo Finizzola. A 377 sq ft terrace gives you marvelous rooftop views. The hotel, an evolution of the 15th century Convento della Santa Maria del Gesu - there are original frescoes and columns in the lobby - is in the Triangolo d'Oro, the main couture area, and you are within a few minutes' walk of Armani, Versace and many other brands.

Burj Al-Arab
All 202 'rooms' at this iconic hotel, run by GM Luc Delafosse, are in fact two-floor suites, with sexy mirrors on the ceilings of the upstairs bedroom, next to the master bathroom with a mural and gold-plated fittings. Signature suites, however, are the nearly-identical 7,800 sq m Royal Suites, 2501 and 2505. Designer Khuan Chew has gone for a riot of color and you have two bedrooms, one with a four-post bed that revolves to reveal a mirrored wall. You have dining for twelve and an incredible marbled bath with alabaster columns. To go for real style, arrange airport transfers by helicopter from the hotel's 28th floor cantilevered landing pad.

Intercontinental Hong Kong
The 7,000 sq ft Presidential Suite gives you a panorama of surrounding Kowloon and across the harbor to Hong Kong Island (like in your 20ft infinity pool, with cocktails, to watch the 8pm laser show illuminating Central's key buildings). Designed by HD Lim, the suite has 18 ft-high windows, a 10-seat dining table inset with computer slots for meetings, a private gym, 500-count sheets, up to five bedrooms and two permanent 24-hour London-trained butlers. GM Jean-Jacques Reibel's innovations at this hotel also include Nobu's first restaurant in south-east Asia.
