Places for Grandmother

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Since she is fit, and loves natural beauty, this is the place for all ages (in a lake-side setting, she will adore sunrise views when the snow-capped 7,500-foot Victoria Mountain tip is really pink-tinged). There are great hikes and climbs, and nature tours with guide Bruce Bembridge. Fairmont Gold rooms give access to the seventh floor club lounge.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Bulgari Hotel, Milan
She is young and up with the trends, and will love the idea of staying in a fashion-designed 52-room conversion of a medieval convent - and as long as she wears the latest Alexander McQueen, Prada or anything black she will fit right in. A long-long suite, say 316, with private elevator and view over neighboring gardens, will appeal. She can enjoy the subterranean candle-lit pool, the art books in the extended lobby, the casual dining - and people watching at all times.

The Ritz-Carlton Cancun
Even the best cook loves to learn something new - and this 369-room resort has a $250,000 Viking Culinary Center where chef Rory Dunaway runs an exciting series of courses. In between classes, there is the Kayantá Spa, specializing in Mayan principles of health and beauty, and the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center. All rooms are at least 438 sq ft, and they all face the Caribbean, but we like those on the eighth and ninth floor, with access to the club lounge.

Reid’s Palace
History and relaxation are signatures of this classic cliff-top hotel, built in 1891 for former Scottish cabin boy William Reid. Of the 169 elegant Mediterranean-facing rooms, we like top floor corner room 872, with two balconies. She can try the new spa, and there are heated and natural outdoor pools. Learn about Madeira (the island and its eponymous wine), take walks, play golf - and do not miss one of the world's best afternoon teas.

The Byron at Byron Resort, Spa & Conference Centre
She will feel bang up to date staying in this high-tech 92-room ecolodge set in 45 acres of highly protected rainforest. All rooms, in two-floor blocks, are identical; you walk around the resort on raised boardwalks to protect the forest floor. The shared pool is a dream, food is fun, and managers John and Lyn Parché are legendary hosts. The nearby beaches are a magnet for Australia's best young surfers, always good for anyone's morale.

The Oriental, Bangkok
Like Siena's Palio, a visit to the Pyramids and the Taj Mahal, staying in this iconic 396-room river-set hotel is a lifetime 'must'. Suite 1212 is themed for Danish captain HN Andersen, who rebuilt the then-11 year old hotel in 1887 - there are polished floors and a ship's wheel. As you walk through the Authors' Lounge, more history unfolds. She must experience Lord Jim's, relaxing by pool and taking a teak boat across the Chao Phraya River to the spa.

A Place In The Sun Hotel
A Place In The Sun Hotel, Palm Springs, CA, USA
Retro nostalgia reigns in this renovated 16-unit single-story motel, built in 1951 for the film crew of A Place In The Sun, with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor, whose mother lived across the street. Realtors Ron and Norma van Meeteren now own it, and serve a healthy breakfast buffet by the heated pool. Bungalow ten has a private garden, and a favorite among the many nearby restaurants is Johnny Costa's, owned by Frank Sinatra's chef.
