Arrivals by Boat

Park Hotel Weggis, Switzerland

The magical arrival is, thanks to Swiss public transport, like clockwork. Alight from your train at Lucerne and take a five minute walk to the ferry. After a 20 minutes' tour around Lake Lucerne you disembark at the Weggis jetty, for a five-minute car ride. Rooms at this luxury hotel, dating back to 1875, look over the water. You have access to a private beach, great skiing and hiking, superb food and wine, fine service and a spa that has memorable private villas, for half- or full-day rental. Peter Kaempfer is your host, here.

Hotel Cipriani
The most stylish way of arriving at Giudecca Island is by motor launch direct from the airport to the hotel (half an hour, via the Grand Canal to get a flavor of this unique city) and during your stay, there is a complimentary five-minute shuttle to the hotel's own Piazzetta San Marco pier. Do not miss swimming in the Cipriani's Olympic-sized salt-water pool, the mozzarella menu at lunch and, at any time, Bellinis in the fun CIP's restaurant. Maurizio Saccani is now MD of the Cipriani.

Dar Al Masyaf, Madinat Jumeirah
Dar Al Masyaf ('summer houses') are a series of elegant villas in the serene Madinat Jumeirah Arabian Resort. The ideal way to arrive is by abra, an electric water taxi that glides along the two miles of inland waterway linking Dar Al Masyaf with Al Qasr, Mina A'Salam and the resort's massive indoor soukh market. WOW.travel loved traveling by abra to the landing post for Malakiya 4, a two-bedroom suite that is also - at other times! - favorite of Irish singing phenomenon Ronan Keating.

One&Only Maldives at Reethi Rah
Michael Payne is General Manager of this famous resort, 55 minutes by super-yacht (and one hour's time ahead) of Male International Airport. Every top global Name appears to be a regular guest, but privacy is sacrosanct - they return to this 109-acre island for its stunning Jean-Michel Gathy-designed villas, its restaurants and signature boutique, Christian Louboutin slippers and Bastien Gonzalez celestial pedicures at the spa.

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle
From Chiang Rai airport it is 75 minutes north by Land Rover to the Ruak River, a feeder to the mighty Mekong. There you, your luggage and a minder board a traditional teak long-tail boat for the final 12 minutes' travel. Camp Manager Jason Friedman waits at the wooden dock. The luxury resort is best known for its villas (for which read super-luxury tents, complete with excellent wireless internet) and its elephant sanctuary, but trips on the river should not be overlooked, either.

Poets Cove Resort & Spa
Poets Cove Resort & Spa, South Pender Island, BC, Canada
It is 40 minutes by public ferry from Victoria to Bedwell Harbour, or you can opt for a 30-minute Poets Cruise water taxi from Port Sidney Marina, which gives you a tour of other islands en route. Built in 1959, the resort is reminiscent of a yacht club - it has its own 110 deep-water slips, open year-round. Stay here also for marine life, and the natural beauty of the surrounding Gulf Islands National Park Reserves, and hiking Mount Norman. General Manager is Peter Parmar.

Rosewood Little Dix Bay
At Tortola BVI's Terrence B Lettsome International Airport, you walk a mere couple of minutes to a private launch for a 20-minute rum-punch ride direct to the hotel jetty. The 600-acre resort was set up by Laurence Rockefeller in the 1960s and many regulars return again and again for its beaches and horticulture (WOW.travel was fascinated by the varieties of butterflies, and 'tourist trees' that, like some ignorant travelers, go red and peel). Other memories include private dinners on a distant cove. General Manager is Martein van Wagenberg.
