Rooftop Pools
Thompson Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CaliforniaThe main rooftop is on the eighth floor, but climb up to an open bar, and still further up to the tenth floor outdoor pool, which offers 40 feet of 'swim', with views to Doheny Towers, where some of our favorite singers live. We love the shopping on Rodeo Drive, two blocks away - and the hotel's Bond Street Beverly Hills restaurant, run by Jonathan Morr. www.thompsonhotels.com

In the city's trendy Meatpacking District, the rooftop of the 13-floor hotel has a 45-foot heated outdoor pool with underwater lights and music. Watch the sun setting over New Jersey, just across the Hudson. Every month, hotel guests find a different farewell gift. (When we were last there, it was La Perla underwear). www.hotelgansevoort.com.
The seventh floor rooftop pool - indoors - is 32 feet long, 16 feet wide, and it is where many Prominent Local Personalities show up, for discretion. When you have finished your lengths, head down to the just-opened Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley, where of course you have booked the eight-seat Chef's Table. www.the-berkeley.com

You feel as if you are rooftop, but in fact, there are ten floors above this 47th-floor pool at the hotel that will forever be called after the Lost In Translation movie. The pool is 63 feet long, and there is an adjacent gym. Afterwards, we recommend dining in the New York Grill, surrounded by Valerio Adami's New York series of artworks. www.tokyo.park.hyatt.com
If you are lucky, you might be in the hotel's two-floor, 7,000 sq ft Presidential Suite, which comes with its own private 28-foot outdoor pool. Alternatively, use the hotel's main outdoor pool, a nearly-octagon shape that is 63 feet across maximum: we love the adjacent clear-lucite hot tub, with sensational views across to Hong Kong Island. www.hongkong-ic.intercontinental.com

Swim in the fourth floor triangular pool (30 feet long by, at its widest, 16 feet) and you can look up at the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, and sideways, across the Harbour to the Opera House. Tom Cruise had an in-room gym built when he stayed here, and Russell Crowe liked the view so much he bought his own luxury apartment in nearby Woolloomooloo. www.sydney.park.hyatt.com
The 32-foot pool is on a 15th floor rooftop of this central-city hotel. As you swim, there are palm tree guards of honor, and a barrel-shaped conservatory roof overhead - look out at the Andes and the city. Afterwards, relax on the same-floor sun terrace. The 205-room luxury hotel is in Las Condes, on the site of what was formerly a movie theater. www.ritzcarlton.com
