We love the cream 'n green room 100, with its Indian fabric wall hanging and, like all Firmdale Hotels, a lifesize traditional tailor's dummy. They do modern-Oz food, plus great gnocchi and buffet breakfast, in Brumus, and take your bikini for the sensational 55-ft basement pool. The hotel's a few minutes from the National Gallery and many theaters.

Borrow a bike for a tour of the locale (on Friday nights, join the three-hour Pari Roller blading assembly, from 10pm). Wake up, leap out to your private terrace (with high fencing) and into your heated hot tub, looking up, in winter, at the snow-capped Mont Blanc. There is a Carita spa, and a 25-foot indoor pool. You have a water ski lake half a mile away, and tennis, and an equestrian center. You also have a modern lodge-type lobby with a big working fireplace, lovely to sit and have a good read. As you go up, see the wall-size photos of Russian life surrounding elevator doors on each floor. All suites come with kitchens, books and art - we like the fullsize Mooi horse sculpture in 207, copies of the pair at the entrance to the British Airways Gold Card lounge at Heathrow. Lech Bunnag's design results in a futuristic Mughal palace floating, it seems, on water - in many bedrooms, an exterior man-make lake, perhaps with lilies and night-time fire bowls, comes right to your window sill. It's extraordinary, and so is the service. Waiters in the 60-foot high Cilantro restaurant quietly glide as they show you superb food displays, quality rather than quantity. The 76th floor outdoor infinity pool (75 ft) and Bliss Spa, with its 73rd floor hot tubs by panoramic windows looking over to Hong Kong Island, are both wow, but also look out for the spa's manicure room - the colored varnish bottles move around on a sushi-type belt.
