10 Questions: Thomas Schmitt-Glaeser, The Sukhothai Bangkok

In our General Manager series, we catch up with heads of hotels for personal stories and insider perspective. This week, we get to know Thomas Schmitt-Glaeser of The Sukhothai Bangkok.

Q Best hotel room at the property:
A

The Garden Suites look out onto the central courtyard and lily ponds, thanks to their spacious balconies floating above the calm of the water lilies. Occupying 76 square meters, they feature a silk-draped, king-sized poster bed. These suites provide a peaceful haven within our already serene surroundings.

Q The hotel’s most interesting detail, service or historical tidbit:
A

An urban oasis in the heart of busy Bangkok, The Sukhothai Bangkok is set amid six acres of lush gardens and water ponds located in our bustling city center. Once inside its classically elegant grounds, guests are quite literally far from the madding crowds.

Q Favorite drink at the nearest bar:
A

Gin and tonic. Sounds very simple, however it must be perfectly blended between Monkey 47 Gin and Thomas Henry Tonic, making it naturally bitter.

Q Favorite dish at the nearest restaurant:
A

Fried snapper with chili sauce, or ‘Pla rad Prik,’ is a whole fish, fried until crispy and then covered with a sweet spicy sauce made from garlic, palm sugar and chilies. One of the street food restaurants, TK Seafood in Bangkok’s China Town serves it. Scrumptious!

Q The neighborhood shop or boutique you love:
A

Pantip Plaza. They sell a wide variety of tech tools and equipment and whatever else you can think of. I love going there because they never disappoint me on what I want to buy.

Q Best touristy activity or outing to do in your city:
A

I enjoy visiting Chinatown. It’s a popular tourist attraction and a food haven for new generation gourmands who flock here after sunset to explore the vibrant street-side cuisine. Packed with market stalls, street-side restaurants and a dense concentration of gold shops, Chinatown is an experience not to be missed.

Q Best non-touristy activity or outing to do in your city:
A

Ko Kret has become another doorway to tourism in Bangkok. Located 20 kilometers north of the main city, the island has secluded centuries-old temples. The Ko Kret community retains much of its traditional characteristics through Mon artistry – earthen clay pots forged on the island.

Q Outside the hotel lobby, what’s your hobby?
A

To keep myself fit and healthy. Attending the gym daily for an hour is my routine. Golf and tennis slot into my plan for weekends, with the golf courses in Bangkok being second to none.

Q Your last holiday destination:
A

I visited Hanoi, Vietnam and stayed at the city’s legendary Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, an iconic hotel, where heritage meets modernity. Hanoi itself is an interesting and historically vibrant city you should not miss.

Q Your next holiday destination, planned or wished:
A

I’m planning to explore New Zealand from north to south to experience the lodging lifestyle, perhaps in one of its superior breed of sophisticated super lodges.
