Seriously Well-Stocked Wine Cellars
by Joy PecknoldGiven hopping around wine country isn’t quite as carefree as it would typically be, we’ve found a workaround: travel the well-stocked shelves of hotel wine cellars. With collections spanning centuries and regions, including more than a few rare vintages, these properties’ private portfolios are particularly flush. A world of wines in one stop? Yes, please.
Seriously Well-Stocked Wine Cellars
Facing the Atlantic since the turn of the 20th century, Ocean House doesn’t just rely on its shoreline address to impress guests—there’s also its newly created Center for Wine and Culinary Arts, a 3,000 square-foot space set up for cooking and wine classes. Take to one of two library cellars, along with the sommelier, for tastings of their 8,000-bottle Wine Spectator award-winning collection.

Seriously Well-Stocked Wine Cellars
This is no ordinary 16th-century Italian manor. Given a new lease on life by designer and architect Alessandro Mendini, Byblos Art Villa Amistà features period pieces revved up by bright paints and vibrant prints, as well as art by Marina Abramovic, Damien Hirst and others. But they definitely don’t mess with traditional when it comes to their 300-label wine cellar where private tastings take place.

Perched above Porto, where port wine is made, The Yeatman references wine in a number of ways. There’s its decanter-shaped pool overlooking the Duoro River, rooms named for winemakers, spacious suites with beds make of enormous wine barrels and a cellar loaded with some 30,000 bottles, which is said to be one of the world’s largest Portuguese wine collections.

A Maldivian vacay is mostly about overwater villas and swims in the aquamarine Indian Ocean, but at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island it can also be about wine. Boasting the most labels in the Maldives, it has 950 and a total of 15,000 bottles, all tucked two meters underground. Here, they set up five-course dinners with pairings hosted by the head chef and sommelier.

Combining classic and modern architecture, Palais Coburg Hotel Residenz extends that philosophy to its wine cellar, or Wine Archive, as they call it. Within its six wine cellars are more than 60,000 bottles spanning four centuries. Order a rare bottle from the Wine Bar, opt for a champagne brunch at the glassed-in Clementine or try wine pairings with a multi-course meal at Michelin-starred Silvio Nickol.

Like an underground spring, only one spouting wine, the wine cellar of Argos in Cappadocia is hidden away in an ancient cave system. It holds more than 400 kinds totalling over 22,000 bottles from Turkey and beyond. For the ultimate experience, take a tasting down here.

Below the flower gardens, spanning more than 16,000 square feet, the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo wine cellar is, in a word, extra. Then again, this is Monaco. The regions their 350,000 bottle-collection focuses on are Champagne, Provence Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone valley.

Six cellars of 4,000 types of wine adding up to 32,000 bottles and a purchase value of more than 26 million Swiss Francs—Park Hotel Vitznau doesn’t mess around with its wine collection. The best and rarest are stowed in wooden boxes behind the champagne bar just waiting to be picked for a special occasion (any reason will do).
