10 Questions: Mohamed Shareef, Mirihi Island Resort

In our General Manager series, we catch up with heads of hotels for personal stories and insider perspective. This week, we get to know Mohamed Shareef of Mirihi Island Resort in the Madives.

Q Best hotel room at the property:
A

Over-Water Suite because of the location. It sits right on top of the best part of our magnificent house reef. Guests could go down the stairs from the terrace to snorkel with countless number of other marine life, including the resident turtles, or just sit around and watch them put on a show for you.

Q The hotel’s most interesting detail, service or historical tidbit:
A

The hotel is built on a private islet, only 25,000 square meters in size and located roughly 400 kilometers north of the equator. Although the island is small, its house reef is 6000 meters in length, giving a lot of private reef to explore even to the most ardent snorkelers.

Q Favorite drink at the nearest bar:
A

Muraka rum, distilled specially for Mirihi and named after our over water restaurant Muraka. This exclusive blend of Caribbean rums is surprisingly fruity with aromas of apricot, green banana and vanilla.

Q Favorite dish at the nearest restaurant:
A

Being surrounded by the Indian Ocean, we are lucky to get daily fresh catches from the local fishermen. A whole white snapper grilled with local herbs and served with curry fennel risotto and fresh, steamed vegetables.

Q The neighborhood shop or boutique you love:
A

The Boutique on the island has a unique range of Mirihi branded items such as perfume, candles, books, beach wears. Local handicraft made from the villages around the Atoll are great souvenirs of Maldives.

Q Best touristy activity or outing to do in your city:
A

Snorkeling with giant manta rays and whale sharks just outside the atoll. It’s an experience that excites both visitors and locals every single time one meets these gentle giants.

Q Best non-touristy activity or outing to do in your city:
A

Playing football with the hotel staff on a lovely turf.

Q Outside the hotel lobby, what’s your hobby?
A

When you live on an island surrounded by natural beauty, where every sunset and sunrise is simply gorgeous and the skies are free of light pollution, one can’t avoid getting hooked on photography and astronomy.
