Labour Day Weekend Getaways
by Kim BudziakAcross North America, the Labour Day holiday recognizes hard work and contributions—no better time to celebrate your own efforts. Here’s seven cities to kick back in for the three-day weekend.
Labour Day Weekend Getaways
Nothing beats Manhattan on the cusp of fall. Check all the bucket list landmarks off your list: Andy Warhol’s “Double Elvis” at the Museum of Modern Art, snow leopards at the Central Park Zoo and the buzz of Times Square. Set yourself up in Midtown at the contemporary designed Knickerbocker or soak in views of Central Park from your tub at the Viceroy Central Park.

Miami’s South Beach strip is loaded with so many dining and lounge spots that the tough part is deciding where to begin. Start with some daytime Art Deco District walks and outdoor yoga available through Kimpton Angler’s Hotel, throw in some sunbathing at the beach or relax poolside at the Hyatt Centric’s rooftop pool deck, and finish with a stroll down Collins Avenue to bask in the neon lights after sunset.
Labour Day Weekend Getaways
Summer lasts a little longer in Vancouver. Locals can be found frequenting patios and beaches until the rain picks up. Follow their lead, but add in some luxury shopping on Alberni Street, a visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery and a day trip to Whistler. To make escaping the city for the mountains easier, check in at Trump International Hotel & Tower, conveniently located on the Georgia Street corridor. Otherwise, head to the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver for a glimpse of the city skyline from The ROOF Restaurant + Bar.

The laid-back vibe of Orange County matches the long weekend mood exactly. Between a bevy of golf courses, crashing ocean waves, unassuming gourmet restaurants and homey décor that borders on beach house, you’ll be feeling as star struck as you are relaxed. Find it all without leaving The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, or head to The Peninsula Beverly Hills, rent a fantastic car, and go for a hike in Runyon Canyon Park.

The Magnificent Mile brings together some of the best of Chicago: restaurants, shopping, comedy shows, museums, and even the Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier. Put it on your weekend itinerary, along with an architecture tour, selfie in the bean (technically, “Cloud Gate”) and a Jimmy Buffet concert at Wrigley Field. Stay just a few blocks off the shores of Lake Michigan, at the Romanesque Waldorf Astoria Chicago or at the design-forward, mile-adjacent Conrad Chicago.
Labour Day Weekend Getaways
Staying in Toronto over Labour Day weekend is prime pre-TIFF time (that’s the Toronto International Film Festival), so you can count on the city’s best pulling out all the stops. Get in on the action in Yorkville by viewing some recent movies in the screening room of The Hazelton Hotel. At the Thompson Toronto, take in the last of summer’s prime sunsets from the rooftop bar and infinity pool, complete with views of the CN Tower.
Labour Day Weekend Getaways
Between Old Montreal’s grand chapels (Notre-Dame Basilica), museums for history buffs (check out Pointe-à-Callière) and a plethora of restaurants (one of the most per capita in the country), Montreal is stacked with things to do. Get in on the 18th- and 19th-century history via the impeccable designs of Hôtel William Gray and Hotel Nelligan. When you’ve had enough of the panoramic rooftop terrace and beautiful exposed brick, play tourist at the Old Port.
