Travel Diaries

Under the Mallorcan Sun

by Amanda Blakley

Mallorca is having a major moment. The Spanish island feels miles from anything but is actually a reasonable flight from most European airports. Soak up all the siestas and seafood like my family and I did on a recent summer escape.

Heavenly hideaways

Belmond La Residencia Belmond La Residencia

Located in the heart of the enchanting hilltop village of Deià, Belmond La Residencia is a 16th-century property luxuriously spread out over 14 hectares. Modern additions and amenities as well as Old World charm and rich history make this luxe home-away-from-home feel so special. They have house donkeys that graze above the olive grove (be sure to walk up and say hello) and fragrant citrus trees growing throughout the grounds. My niños adored the pottery workshops and cooking classes—the programming for the littles meant the adults could enjoy some quiet time by the pool. A sweet little extra offered to all guests is the complimentary boat excursion in the crystal-clear waters of the Mallorcan Mediterranean at sunset—register in advance!

Castell Son Claret Castell Son Claret

Castell Son Claret is the perfect place to ring in a special birthday, celebrate an anniversary or blow a bonus cheque. This historical and remote castle is discreetly tucked into the Tramuntana Mountains. It’s worth the splurge to enjoy their intuitive hospitality, supremely comfortable rooms and fine dining at their on-site Michelin-starred restaurant. Located on a hilltop, the property overlooks two small towns which each have several local restaurants and cafes. There is just enough to do (or not do) here that you won’t feel the need to kick your sightseeing into high gear.

Beach days

Deia Beach Lunch at Deia Beach

A visit to rocky-but-picturesque Deià Beach is a must on any Mallorcan itinerary. Have lunch at one of the two waterside cafes. One’s fancier and the other more casual, but a reservation is strongly suggested for either during peak season. Then plan to spend the rest of your day in and out of the welcoming waters.

Sant Elm

A small coastal town on the western edge of the island, Sant Elm makes the perfect day trip from Castell Son Claret with its turquoise waters, lovely little cove and busy Main Street full of cute cafes and souvenir shops.

Towns to explore

A coastal town on the northeast side of the island, Port de Pollença is also where popular British show The Night Manager was filmed. Cool off at the local beach, have an alfresco seafood spread at one of the many coastal cafes and pop into the little tourist shops along the quay. Beat the heat by stopping for ice cream along the way.

The rugged medieval walled city of Alcúdia is full of history and culture. If you visit throughout the summer months, try and take in an open-air concert. On Tuesdays and Sundays, there is a great local market full of seasonal produce from across the island as well as handicrafts, jewelry and souvenirs.

Deià is an artsy town located in the magical north end of the island. Enjoy tapas and pinxtos at Xelini (http://xelini.com/) and sit on the upper patio under the shade of old olive trees. The little shops stay open late so it’s a perfect place to partake in a post-dinner walk as you meander back to your hotel.
