“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still,” said the late documentary photographer Dorothea Lange. When we can’t be somewhere, it’s these held-still moments that continue to transport us. So we asked a few of our favorite photographers about their most memorable travels immortalized on film. Looking back through their albums, they share the special places they won’t soon forget.

“The vast landscapes of Namibia hold a dear place in my heart. The rust-red dunes, bleached riverbeds and deep blue skies of Namibia symbolize more than the country’s dry and uninhabited expanse; there is a fragility to these ancient landscapes. The Namib Desert is said to be the oldest desert in the world, a place that holds an embodied spirit. A transformative land, which glows deep reds to burnt oranges as the desert transforms with the light. A part of the world my mind always wanders back to.”

“The Amalfi Coast has been a tradition of mine every fall. It’s the best time to visit because the locals travel south to avoid the tourist crowds. There is something so special about southern Italy, where you feel like time stands still. It has a unique retro color palette, some of the best food you will ever have, and people who make you feel at home.”

“Tiny Atlas collaborated with Soludos and Kiwi Collection on a dream project earlier this year in Trancoso, Brazil staying at UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa. I had been to Brazil a couple of times before—I love the country and warm, gracious people—but never Bahia. Trancoso is one of those legendary places passionate travelers tell each other about. A picturesque quadrado lined by colorful homes and shops with an ancient church is the focal point. Palm tree-lined rivers rush to a warm sea through soft sand and music is always playing. If I could go again and again, I would. This is the sunrise view right behind our room at UXUA.”

“My father is from India and so being able to travel there as an adult was an incredibly magical and emotional experience. I grew up listening to tales of Maharajas and Maharanis as a child, so staying at Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur made all my girlhood dreams come true. This floating palace glimmers on Lake Pichola and there are endless hallways that lead to hidden lookouts with breathtaking views, all bathed in that unmistakable Indian light.”

“One of my favorite travel memories was spending 10 days in Morocco with Nikon and AFAR photographing experiences like this in the Sahara Desert. I have always been fascinated by the desert. There is something mysterious and alluring about the landscape the pulls me in. Morocco is full of so many beautiful landscapes and filled with such a rich cultural heritage. This was an unforgettable, life-changing trip. I have never felt so free and so alive.”

“French Polynesia has to have been my favorite travel memory from the last decade. While there, we had the opportunity to swim with humpback whales in the open ocean on multiple occasions—one of the most humbling experiences of my lifetime. Exploring nature is the most grounding thing in the world for me, I love capturing the natural beauty of a location and sharing my version with the world. I want people to be inspired to be stewards of this planet and I hope the more I share her beauty the more people will appreciate her.”

“There are some places so special that they literally take your breath away. I’ll never forget the moment I arrived at Hotel San Cristóbal. If I close my eyes I can transport myself back to that magical atmosphere—the classic ease of the Baja decor, the twinkle lights brightening as the sun is setting, the salty chill of my margarita and the sound of live acoustic Eric Clapton music riding the ocean breeze across the shimmery pool. Just the best memory!”

“Traveling to Chile had always been a dream of ours, but nothing could have prepared us for the feeling of experiencing these vast landscapes in person. This photo was taken after a grueling yet unbelievably rewarding all-day hike (22km to be exact!) to Mirador Las Torres. We had just returned back to our hotel to catch the late daylight illuminating the mountain range in the distance. To experience Mother Nature on this scale was nothing short of spectacular.”
Since leaving their careers in New York to travel the world in 2012, Sarah and Stefaan evolved Miles & Miles from an archive of their travels into an interdisciplinary agency. When they tied the knot they partnered with Kiwi Collection on an adventure honeymoon in Chile.
