Spectacular retreat at the Golden Gate
I return every year, because it's a special place. What a view of the bridge! Great food, including amazing large plates at the bar, ease of access to city cultural activities (museums, opera, etc.) on the one hand and Marin Headlands on the other. My "go to" place in SF.
Nature next to the city
We really enjoyed our stay.
The location is excellent, the view is fantastic and the food, wow!
Great location for those of us that like peace and quiet but still be a stone throw of the city. The views, the room, attention to detail, service, restaurant, all first class.
Oasis near San Francisco
What we loved:
The views of the Golden Gate Bridge are sublime and impart a lot of magic to the feel of Cavallo Point Lodge and its impact is quickly noted when the bridge is enveloped in fog and not visible from the property. The grounds of the property are very well maintained and simply inviting with the historic lodges, the Adirondack chairs sitting amidst fescu grass, the hills/peaks of the Marin headlands on one side and the striking views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city in the other direction. In brief, the property has gorgeous vistas in all directions.
The staff is friendly and engaging and a simple question to the gardener turned into a nice conversation. This scenario was repeated with the valets and an employee in The Mercantile (a shop in the main building).
There are two options for lodging - historic (restored officers quarters, Fort Baker) and contemporary (green architecture, many with breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge).
What could be improved:
We stayed in a two bedroom suite in one of the historic lodges. The room appeared to be in need of updating. The carpet and upholstery were starting to show their age with wear and tear. There was a slight musty odor in the sitting room and larger bedroom in our suite. The towels were not luxurious and on the rough side. These rooms do not have air conditioning and although the windows may be opened they lack screens. While in the room, we did not feel as if we were at a luxury property. In brief, the room was in stark contrast to the Wow! factor imparted by the exterior of the property.
Overall, this is a spectacular property but the historic lodging needs some touches/upgrading to make it luxurious.
