Overview

Hawaii's Kona District - home to radical sports such as surfing and triathlons, but also rejuvenating and relaxing refuges, such as the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu.

In addition to the standard amenities and services you'll find at other Hawaiian resorts, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu now offers an extra $40 million in enhancements.

You'll have access to the Hualalai Spa, which has undergone a massive 2009 expansion. Recline in the Water of Life garden, or "Waiea," while waiting for your treatment, or hop between steam rooms, whirlpools, saunas, and plunge pools - all outdoors, all under sun-dappled trees and blue skies.

One of the Four Seasons Resort's signature draws is its Hualalai Golf Course, a full 18-hole course stretching over 7,100 yards, designed by Jack Nicklaus himself. It ends by the beach, so as you finish the last few holes, you'll be revived by sea breezes and rays of sunlight bouncing off the ocean.

Once you're ready to go and explore the island, rent a car and head east or south - you'll quickly run into several national parks and reserves, where you can hike 'til your heart's content.

Off the Charts

My wife and I spend 6 nights at the Four Seasons Hualalai. They updraded us to an unbelievable suite. We have never been to a nicer hotel in our lives. The service was unparalleled and we will definitely be back. I could not give this property or experience a high enough rating. It was that good!

The good and the bad

My check-in experience was horrific at the very least.
1. They knew our travel schedule / flight information and our room was not ready when we arrived. We had lunch and then were told the room wouldn't be ready until 3pm (which I believe is the standard check-in time, so we had to let that slide).
2. The hotel called me back at 2pm to say they they did not have rooms available for upgrade, and this was a lie as we found out later. They also shared that our room would not be ready until 4:30pm, well past the standard check-in time and 6 hours after we arrived.
3. We finally checked into the room we booked "Ocean View" at 5:30pm. The room was on the ground floor and all we could see were pool cabanas through one window, plants and a tree in the other window.
4. I called the front desk and explained what had happened to a woman who acknowledged this was NOT even a proper ocean view room!!! She was lovely and as it turns out, they did originally have a room for upgrade (above what we were supposed to have) and she arranged for us to move rooms that night. So 12 hours after we arrived, we finally checked in :(

As for the overall hotel experience, it was soured by the fact we had to waste an entire day of our 3 day honeymoon waiting to shower or even change after a red-eye flight. To be fair, I can say however that they have every amenity available, the food was OUTSTANDING and the service (other than Sunday morning check-in) was wonderful.

Gym facilities are top-notch and the environment is very serene. Downside: Hotel is 2-3 hours one-way from any activities, except the helicopter ride.

Location

The North Kona coast of the Big Island is blessed with the most agreeable climate of the entire Hawaiian archipelago: sunny, warm, and dry. While there, you'll be surrounded by endless beaches, rich black lava, and fertile vegetation, with the legendary (and active) Mauna Loa volcano looming directly to the East. The Four Seasons Resort is only 10 minutes from the international airport, and car rental services are available on-site for exploring the island whenever you're ready.
