Destination Dispatches: Morukuru Magic

With a world of choices, choosing a vacation destination isn’t easy. But presented with a little time off in November, I knew I had to follow through on on my childhood dreams—a safari in South Africa.

After a long flight and a four-hour drive I arrived at the Morukuru Family lodge, which became more than a home far away from home. The group was spoiled with a friendly welcome by an old giraffe five minutes after entering the beautiful Madikwe Game Reserve where Morukuru is located.

Madikwe Game Reserve, situated in the North West province, is one of the South Africa’s largest Big Five game reserves with excellent year-round game viewing. Being Malaria-free makes it an ideal family friendly destination. In keeping with the friendly theme, we were all treated to a glass of champagne, cold towel, and welcome song on arrival.

We soon realize this isn’t your run-of-the-mill accommodation. Both luxurious and intimate, The Lodge provides guests the comfort of a real home, with its own private kitchen. It is suitable for six adults and four children, having three double en suite bedrooms with air conditioning and fans, a fireplace for chilly nights and large insect-screened sliding doors that open onto tree-shaded private balconies. There is a special room created for the children where they can play. The bathrooms are spectacular with glass doors overlooking the private deck with a view of the Marico River, featuring both inside and outside private showers.

The elegantly-decorated large living room opens onto the wooden deck which is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the wild.

After that, plunge into the pool, sip a refreshing drink or anything else. It’s do “whatever you want, whenever you want” here.

What makes Morukuru so unique is the fact that there are no rules, no routines, no schedules. Their Freedom Concept has been designed to celebrate the “pure freedom feeling during your holiday.” It’s a magic space where families and friends can spend quality time together. I’d also recommend Morukuru to young couples wanting to spend some time away from stressful city life.

There are three villas: The Lodge, the Owner’s House and the Farm House. Each offers its own chef, butler, personal hostess, game ranger and tracker. Having the same people taking care of you throughout your stay will create an unforgettable holiday experience. It’s the kind of place where the staff members become chums and transform great service into something truly memorable. Served in a different place each time, every meal felt like a special occasion.

I enjoyed dining outdoors, listening to the fire and the great African Bush stories presented by our ranger, Calvin.

We chose to have our days started at 5:45 a.m., having two game drives each day.

With its own private land within Madikwe Game Reserve, Moruku provides exclusive game viewing. It felt like we were the only tourist in the area. Elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes and all other animals weren’t bothered by our presence, letting us enjoy each moment to the maximum.

Where else you can enjoy a glass of wine, surrounded by 12 curious giraffes, while watching the sunset with your friends?

The Lodge, the people, the exotic animals, the scent in the air and the beautiful land all creatie “The Morukuru Magic” and I’m inviting everyone to experience it.
