There’s a way to have that without all the work: glamping. Herein are nine resorts that have camp set up for you.
Canada: Clayoquot Wilderness Resort
Away from it all, just outside Tofino on British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, this resort takes its style cues from 19th-century camps, but with many more creature comforts. The spa, dining area, lounges and guest rooms are in their own kitted-out canvas tents. In the day, adventures await, including kayaking, fishing and whale watching.
United States: Dunton Hot Springs
A Colorado ghost town transformed into a gorgeous mountain getaway, the resort has eight canvas tents in an alpine clearing, summer teepees too, as well as 21 wood cabins for those who prefer more solid walls. There’s a library, spa and saloon, and even an open-air chapel if you wish to get hitched.
United Arab Emirates: Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa
To say these are Bedouin tents is a bit of a stretch. They’re full-on sumptuous suites, but there’s some canvas involved, particularly right above each private pool to provide shade. Rough, right? Bordering the desert, there’s dune drives, camel treks and horse rides to take.
Tanzania: Singita Grumeti Reserves Sabora Tented Camp
The safari tent of your dreams; Singita’s realized it. Silks, Persian rugs, plush pillows, glass decanter full of whiskey, it’s all there. There are also modern conveniences that the 19th century English explorers didn’t have, such as a 24-hour gym and wireless internet.
India: Aman-i-Khás
Right on the edge of Rajasthan’s Ranthambore National Park, these opulent 10 canopied tents have cotton screens separating the sleeping, dressing and bathing areas. Oh, and air conditioning, how sweet it is. The central firepit is the gathering place, and tiger safaris are the popular activity.
Indonesia: Amanwana
On Moyo Island, Amanwana is secluded—you can only fly-in—but it’s by no means rough. All around is nature reserve, and the tents are spacious and luxurious. No fire-starting necessary, they’ll bring the BBQ dinner to you, on a private section of the beach, backed by a bonfire.
Thailand: Four Seasons Tented Camp
In Northern Thailand, tucked into verdant jungle, Four Seasons has 15 tents equipped with hand-hewn furniture and hammered copper tubs. As an all-inclusive it means exploratory experiences are a part of it too.
Chile: Patagonia Camp
It’s winter in the Southern Hemisphere right now, but make plans to visit this camp in Torres del Paine National Park come December. The 17 yurts overlook Lake Toro and the impressive Paine Massif, and guides will take you to see the sights with packed picnic lunches.
Australia: Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef
Fronting the beach of Western Australia’s Cape Range National Park, the eco-friendly safari-style camp has nine tents. It’s location puts you close to both a reef teeming with life—snorkel or sea kayak—and the Mandu Mandu gorge with its ‘roos and wallabies.
