Hotel Spotlights

The Most Ravishing Rooms

Interior designer Juan Montoya said, “A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.” Given we dip into them so briefly, hotel rooms are especially well-suited to serve up surprise and delight. Inspired by International Design Day this month, we asked some of our always-traveling friends with impeccable taste to choose their favorite immaculately designed room and elaborate on all the captivating details. Step inside and escape vicariously.

Patina Maldives

One Bedroom Water Pool Villa | Rhiannon Taylor @inbedwith.me

In a sea, literally, of resorts that subscribe to a classical “island chic” feel, Patina is a standout in the Maldives, engaging cutting-edge Studiomk27 to design a property that is modern in feel yet in sync with the tropical location. The rooms are distinctly cool with custom Frette charcoal linens, mid-century armchairs and a jaw-dropping stone bath that sits proudly on the overwater balcony. Island touches, such as bamboo cladding and rattan low-hanging lamps pair perfectly with the muted, moody tones of the villa, making the space incredibly relaxing.

Amangiri

Desert Suite | Carley Rudd @carleyscamera

Like the property itself, the rooms at Amangiri feel totally serene with their expansive views that overlook the raw wilderness of the Utah landscape. The room style blends seamlessly with the surroundings allowing the natural contours, textures and colors to inform the design. I was immediately drawn to the soft, natural hues and use of organic materials inspired by the Native American Navajo and Pueblo hogan architecture. A stay here offers a truly unique and deeply spiritual experience—it stayed with me long after I left.

Santa Monica Proper Hotel

Premier King | Jessica Wright @bontraveler

Hotel room interior design with king bed by Jessica Wright @bontraveler Hotel room design interiors at Santa Monica Proper Hotel by Jessica Wright @bontraveler

Designed by Kelly Wearstler, the vision for Santa Monica Proper is beach meets sophistication. There are many intimate details throughout the room like eclectic lighting and woven wallpaper that provide the most wonderful texture. The center focus of the room is the incredible half-arched headboard with floating side tables and lights intertwined into it giving it a cozy feeling. I loved the sitting area set with a marble table and comfortable lounge chair—the perfect spot for an in-room meal. I felt like I had my very own chic beach bungalow, one decorated with all of the incredible art and design that is found in Los Angeles.

Hôtel Plaza Athénée Paris

Suite 609 | Ana Linares @ananewyork

Hotel room design with beautiful furniture at Hôtel Plaza Athénée by Ana Linares @ananewyork Hotel room design with Eiffel Tower view at Hôtel Plaza Athénée by Ana Linares @ananewyork

This is one of the most iconic and romantic Art Nouveau palace hotels in Paris, not only for its location on the chic Avenue Montaigne but also for its fashion heritage and unmatched views of the Eiffel Tower. I have visited Hôtel Plaza Athénée so many times that coming back always feels like being home. This past February, I celebrated a special birthday at one of their signature suites, 609, also known as the Carrie Bradshaw Suite where some of the most iconic Sex and the City episodes were filmed. The suite’s sumptuous fabrics and rich shades of pink are the work of wonderful designer Marie-José Pommereau. To top it off, you wake up to the most beautiful views of the Eiffel Tower from your own balcony where you can enjoy a bucket-list breakfast or a champagne nightcap.

Zannier Hotels Omaanda

One-Bedroom Hut | Laura and Nicolas Herbert @laurandnicolas

Made Owambo-style with clay and thatch, our one-bedroom hut at Zannier Hotels Omaanda is set within a 22,000-acre wildlife conservancy reserve. The design is simple and rustic, but beautifully complements the landscape, with the warm colors of the interior reflecting the natural environment of Namibia. The use of clay for the walls gives the space a lot of texture and constantly reminds you of where you are. Every single object in the room has been hand-picked and sourced all over Africa. Our hut also had a two-sided fireplace, which you could enjoy while being in the living area and bathroom. The whole design makes for such an authentic and luxurious experience.

Tierra Chiloé Hotel & Spa, Chile

Suite with Sea View | Sarah Murphy and Stefaan du Pont @sarahirenemurphy & @sdpnt

Hotel room design and architecture at Tierra Chiloé in Chile from Sarah Murphy and Stefaan du Pont Hotel room design at Tierra Chiloé in Chile with a woman in an outdoor pool and a rainbow from Sarah Murphy and Stefaan du Pont

The rooms of Tierra Chiloé—not to mention the entire building—are so effortlessly immersed into the landscape, we truly felt at one with nature. Designed by Chilean firm Mobil Arquitectos, this sustainable, truly luxurious escape allows for the perfect retreat from the many outdoor activities that await. We loved soaking in the stand-alone tub with panoramic views of the Pullao Wetlands and stepping outside into the heated pool. Those who are lucky, like we were, may catch a rainbow.
