The Peninsula Bangkok

by Darren Dunne

Since opening its doors in 1998, The Peninsula Bangkok has earned a reputation not only as one of the city’s finest hotels, but also as a jewel of Asian hospitality. With a world-class spa offering, convenient location and distinctive look, it provides the perfect welcome to visitors of the “Land of Smiles.” Read on as we take a closer look at this grand hotel by the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

Riverside Luxury

Dating back to its founding in the 15th century, Bangkok has been a city crisscrossed by canals, earning the moniker of the “Venice of the East.” With modernization came the filling in of these canals, leaving just the Chao Phraya River as the marine artery of the city. The 39-storey Peninsula Bangkok stands right on the waterfront and the distinctive waved-shape design affords panoramic views of the city from each of the 370 rooms and suites.

Settling In

The interiors at The Peninsula Bangkok hark back to colonial days, richly furnished with Thai silk-clad finishes and extravagant marble bathrooms. The 370 accommodations are housed across 10 categories, ranging from Deluxe Rooms with modern amenities and walk-in closets all the way up to the stunningly appointed Peninsula Suite, with crystal chandeliers and teakwood flooring. No matter which accommodation option one plumps for, a daily fruit basket and complimentary Wi-Fi Internet are standard.

Fine Dining

An array of culinary choice awaits visitors to Bangkok, and one doesn’t have to even step out of The Peninsula Bangkok to enjoy flavors from around the globe. Mei Jiang is the hotel’s Chinese restaurant and Executive Chef Jackie Ho blends traditional recipes with artful creativity to produce an innovative menu. Under majestic Banyan trees one can dine on Thai staples riverside at Thiptara. All-day buffet dining can be found al fresco at The River Café, while The Peninsula’s renowned afternoon tea is served up at The Lobby. Post-victuals, one can imbibe at The River Bar while taking in the cityscape.

The Spa

Housed inside a three-story, Thai colonial-style building is The Peninsula Bangkok’s world-class spa offering. The Peninsula Spa blends the best of European, Oriental and Ayurvedic philosophies to create a bespoke treatment menu for guests in a relaxing environment. For the sportier, work out at the modern fitness center, take lessons from the hotel’s tennis coach, or swim a few laps of the hotel’s three-tier outdoor pool.

Meetings & Events

Reflecting Bangkok’s status as one of the world’s major commercial centers, The Peninsula Bangkok offers a selection of facilities to fit events of all shapes and sizes. The dramatic Sakuntala Foyer serves as an impressive pre-function space for serving refreshments and networking. Afterwards, smaller events can be hosted at the Paribatra Aviation Lounge with its adjoining private helipad. If a larger space is required, the majestic Sakuntala Ballroom has space for up to 800 guests.

Travel in Style

When one stays in such resplendent surrounds, it’s only fair to travel in equally opulent style. The Peninsula Bangkok offers a customized fleet that consists of a Rolls-Royce Silver Spur, BMW 7 Series and a private chopper from the hotel’s own helipad. For a more authentic Bangkok experience, guests can explore on the hotel’s own three-wheel tuk-tuk, or one of four beautifully restored rice barges that sit on the river.
