Best Summer Reading Spots
by Joy PecknoldTo distant lands and back in time, books whisk us away to fascinating places. With World Book Day on April 23rd and beach read season just around the corner, we scoped out some of the sweetest summer reading spots—from a hammock with views of the Halkidiki Peninsula to a leather lounger looking out on the wilds of Ranthambore. Because plunging into a good novel is always a great escape, but taking a vacay with a stack of them is even better.

Ibiza is for book clubbers too. On the island’s northern coast, overlooking Cala Xarraca Bay, Six Senses Ibiza invites more serenity than all-night revelry. Anchoring its focus on wellness and spirituality are its cliffside suites decorated in earthy tones and textures. For the best reading and sunbathing situation, book a suite with a spacious sea view terrace or ball out on one of their palatial townhouses or mansions.

In Northern Greece, Eagles Villas is just that—42 villas perched like regal raptors above the Halkidiki Peninsula. On your private terrace, switch between stretching out on the lounge chairs and swinging hammock, followed by refreshing dips in your very own pool. You’ll finish all The Neapolitan Novels in no time.

Take a chapter from Under the Tuscan Sun and move into a villa, albeit one that’s already been immaculately renovated. Borgo Santo Pietro and its gorgeous grounds have all kinds of reading refuges, but the garden suites with Mediterranean courtyard allow you to just step out of bed and onto a shade-dappled lounger. Good book, glass of wine, that’s amore.

After a picnic in the Tuileries, crack open the used copy of A Moveable Feast you found at Shakespeare and Company on your Brach suite’s terrace—some come with Eiffel Tower views and Norwegian wood hot tubs, oh la la. Evok, the brand behind the chic hotel in the 16th, loves lit too—every year they give out a literary award to honor the best summer read.

Take your love of Regency era novels to the next level by dropping yourself right into the setting at Hotel Endsleigh, a manor house built back in 1810 for the Duchess of Bedford. Just as a Jane Austen heroine would do, read on the terrace with a cup of tea or, if you can walk and read at the same time, while strolling through the acres upon acres of gardens. Of course, there’s always the library too, which has the most perfect patterned chaise positioned by the window.

One could argue that no one’s getting any reading done at a SoHo rooftop pool in the peak of summer, but if you can manage it, you’ll look oh so artful and mysterious. At ModernHaus SoHo‘s skyscraper-level setup, grab a blue poolside lounger and dive into Colson Whitehead’s latest Crook Manifesto with occasional breaks to eavesdrop and take in the big city views.

Spanning 24 acres with a mile-long private beach and five swimming pools, family-friendly beach resort Isla Bella on Florida’s Marathon Key definitely isn’t short on spectacular reading spots. We’re partial to the idyllic-looking Adirondack chairs and hammocks overlooking the ocean.

With its elegant residential-style residences, L’Ermitage Beverly Hills is like trading home sweet home for home suite home, albeit you’re in 90210 territory. Featuring spacious lounges with balcony doors that open to let in Santa Ana winds, the upper-level suites are the swishiest setup. You can also take your book up to the pool or your working screenplay of it to the lobby where the former Writer’s Bar saw Matt Damon and Ben Affleck meeting to finish up Good Will Hunting.

Sprawl out on a sofa or curl up in a tufted chair, Malibu Beach Inn suites have both. The same man who redesigned these rooms, Waldo Fernandez, decorated homes for Elizabeth Taylor and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt so you’re in good company. Whichever seat you choose, don’t forget to open the sliding door to let those cool, salty Pacific Ocean breezes in.

At this 10-tent camp nestled in Rajasthan’s Ranthambore National Park, you can sit back in a leather lounger and occasionally peek up from the pages to spot wildlife at the nearby watering hole. To gather tales for your own stories, head out on one of the daily safari drives to see tigers, leopards and crocodiles.
