Step back in time and experience a little monastic charm at the adults-only Eremito - Hotelito del Alma, a secluded eco-resort surrounded by a peaceful natural reserve.

The hotel is located in rural Umbria, roughly two hours north of Rome by car. The site formerly hosted the ruin of a 14th century hermitage, a ruin which was lovingly restored to the current luxury lodgings.

Only 21 guest "Celluzze" are present, each styled to resemble monkish quarters from ancient times. The austere aesthetic extends to a lack of in-room WiFi Internet, phone and television - This is a space to unplug and unwind in.

Dining at Eremito is a simple affair, with the hotel restaurant serving a fixed vegetarian menu drawn exclusively from the private, organic garden on-site. The bread and pasta are home made, as are the jams and cakes.

The pace of life tends to move a little slower in the Umbrian countryside, and the range of activities available to guests reflects this. Yoga and meditation courses are offered, while horse riding and walks in the woods along the Chiani River provide slightly more active options.

Features wrought-iron French bed, valley or rose garden views, private shower and toilet, underfloor heating and a desk. Just like in the monasteries of the Middle Ages, the rooms or cells are called Celluzze. Each Celluzze, with private bath, has underfloor heating supplied by a wood-burning boiler. The sheets, antique duvet covers and pillowcases are all hand-embroidered. A comfortable seat and desk in stone next to the window will inspire guests whether they are looking at the green valley or the rose garden outside.
