It's big, pink, and on the storied island of Bermuda - it's Fairmont Southampton. For wining, dining and swimming, this is the type of place you'll want to strand yourself permanently.

Surrounded by an army of lush trees and bougainvillea, and flanked by white sands and azure seas, Fairmont Southampton envelops its visitors in a paradisiacal environment that many find almost impossible to escape from.

And the guests are indeed "many": 593 rooms include 11 junior suites and 11 one - and two-bedroom suites that travellers can rest their tired bodies in come day's end. Look out the window over the Atlantic or the 18-hole, award-winning golf course. The room designs are somewhat muted, and clearly colonial in inspiration. What they lack in modernity, they make up for (in spades) with charm.

The resort boasts ten restaurants and bars. Options range from the British pub-inspired Cellar and the Italian country Bacci, to the breezy Ocean Club and ultra-kicked-back Cabana Bar & Grill.

Get wet inside at the 31,000-sq.-ft. spa, or outside in either the pool, or the clear ocean. Take a PADI lesson, or choose to stay above with a snorkel. Kids are kept active for as long as parents want (or need) at the Explorer's Camp.

Reliable Stay

I tend to stay at the Fairmont Southampton when I am in Bermuda. Though I would like to try other hotels such as The Reefs or Tucker's Point, The Reefs is always booked (good for them!) and I am hesitant to spend the money Tucker's Point asks for considering some of the negative comments on Tripadvisor. With that said, I find Fairmont Southampton a great value for Bermuda. The staff is warm (though a bit disorganized at Windows On the Sound); the renovated rooms are comfortable and modern while the Le Labo bath products lend a chic touch. The walls are a bit thin so you will hear early morning running and shouting in the hallways from children excited to get to the beach. My only frustration though with the property is that they don't comb the beach. Detritus washed up from the storm that hit the east coast of the US so the beach was littered with among other things, bottle caps, plastic bags and a lot of seaweed. Not only was it unpleasant to swim through, I was concerned for the sea life that could accidentally consume these objects if they washed back out. I tried picking up garbage as I happened upon on them. Though the staff saw me doing this, they didn't do anything themselves. I went to neighboring The Reefs for lunch and their beach was immaculate. I was told they clean the beach every day. I wrote a letter to Fairmont so hopefully they will address this in the near future. Despite this, I would still recommend this property.

Decent Value For Bermuda

Unless you have made your reservations today to stay at one of Bermuda's smaller hotels next year...the rates you will be left with, will be on the high side. With that said, I think that of the high-rate hotels (ie: Elbow Beach, Tuckers Point) this is the least expensive and a decent value. The rooms are large, well kept and extremely comfortable. I thought the service friendly and very inviting. In general Bermudians are absolutely lovely and are obviously proud of their beautiful little island. It showed with the people who worked at the Fairmont Southampton. It's a type of hotel that caters to families and corporate functions so considering the magnitude of people of varying ages staying at the hotel, the staff maintained an easy, friendly, open attitude. The only "annoying" aspect was the amount of people on their private beach. The beach was very crowded but I'm not sure there is anything the hotel can do about that since the same beach also accommodates patrons from their sister hotel the Fairmont Hamilton. Since I was there during peak season (July 20-22nd), I should have anticipated this. It was a minor annoyance compared to what I gained: a relaxing, hassle-free weekend getaway.
