While neither borrowed nor blue, the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund does an expert job marrying old and new - all with a situation directly on the historic Bund.

You feel you are right on the historic Bund, particularly from the suites in the Heritage Club Building.
Although a distinctly modern city, Shanghai also offers a storied history reaching back … well … really, really far. The Waldorf Astoria exemplifies the balance between yesterday and tomorrow perfectly, with a 100-year-old wing adjacent to a sparkly new tower.

The two buildings juggle 257 rooms and suites. In the historic wing, a Victorian aesthetic comes through loud and clear, with four-post beds and claw-foot tubs. Of course, the in-mirror TV doesn’t date back quite so far. In the tower wing, furnishings are somewhat more modern, offering a refreshed view of classic styling. Enjoy marble bathrooms, and walk-in closets.

Get your deep tissues loosened down in the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, or order any treatment up to your room - if walking is just too much for you.

Six bars and restaurants appeal to all tastes, from the resurrected Long Bar, contemporary Grand Brasserie and elegant Salon de Ville, to the glittering Peacock Alley and NYC-inspired, Pelham's.

One last eatery that's not to be missed, is the wood ensconced Wei Jing Ge, where countless antiques watch silently as Shanghainese, Cantonese, and Huai Yang cuisines are hastily gobbled up.

Classy Luxury

Stayed in the hotel for 3 nights on a family trip to Shanghai. Both my parents and I enjoyed the stay very much. I reserved 2 regular deluxe rooms, and both rooms were upgraded to deluxe river rooms. 2 weeks prior to my arrival, I received an email from the front office manager to confirm my reservation, and ask if there was anything that the hotel could prepare ahead of time. I asked for room upgrade as a Hilton HHonors member, and a surprise gift for my father for his birthday. The manager's response was fast, and she promised that she would try her best to satisfy my requests.

When we arrived at the hotel, I was notified both rooms were upgraded to the river side. They also nicely presented a birthday cake in my parents' room. It was a perfect beginning for my visit to Shanghai. The hotel room was spacious, well-appointed, and spotless. Check-in was in the room, so there was no line and the procedure was efficient and speedy.

After check-in, I walked to the window and was amazed by the view. It was a poster perfect view of Pudong. The Bund and all the glittering high-rises were right in front of me. I felt if I stretch my arm, I could touch them all. (Unfortunately, the windows in my room were locked) I highly recommend to reserve a room with a river view.

All hotel staff are extremely polite and attentive. Breakfast was served in the Grand Brasserie, a restaurant in the lower floor of the new wing. It has a nice selection of food items, both Chinese and western. They also serve eggs "cooked to order" from a separate menu. The food was definitely top quality. Nowadays, as food safety is a huge issue in China, the hotel makes almost everything from their own kitchen without food additives, including yogurt. With such well prepared breakfast, every day had a good start.

During my last night at the hotel, we also went to the Chinese restaurant of the hotel, Wei Jing Ge. It mainly serves Shanghai, Eastern Chinese and Cantonese cuisine. The food was excellent, the presentation was creative, the atmosphere was classy and the service was appropriate. If there was a Chinese Michelin rating, I would definitely give the restaurant 3 stars.

My only small complaint about the hotel is the perfume in the old building lobby tend to be a bit strong. Not a big deal, but the strong odor can make certain guests uncomfortable. If I return to Shanghai, the Waldorf will definitely be my first choice for hotel.
