How do we rate a property?
We rate all our hotels, resorts, and lodges using our own bespoke grading system. We'll only invite a property into our collection once it's been assessed by one of our specialists. If it doesn't impress us, it doesn't make the cut.
From the quality of the food served in the restaurant to the amenities offered in each bedroom, we carefully rate each property to make sure it meets our high expectations.

In 1925, the Hotel Californian first opened as a gateway to the beach and downtown Santa Barbara. Only eleven days later, the historic earthquake and fire of 1925 rocked this city, and the hotel, to its core. Following the destruction, Santa Barbara was rebuilt in a way only a Hollywood dreamer could imagine—a thoughtfully designed playground meant to capture the allure of an imagined California.
Today, the re-imagined Hotel Californian finds itself at the entrance of Santa Barbara's burgeoning arts district, just steps away from the beach. Incorporating the façade of the original 1925 hotel, this desirable destination is designed to impress with a Moroccan-inspired spa, two acclaimed restaurants and a rooftop pool.
Spread across three buildings, the 121 guest rooms and suites possess a distinct flair, combining Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with Moroccan influences. Celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard brings bronze oil-rubbed bath fixtures, mashrabiya patterned bathroom vanities and closet doors and premium cocktail carts with gourmet snacks into the rooms, along with private balconies with either ocean, mountain, or courtyard views.
