Overview

When Marilyn Monroe needed a place to escape the ever-increasing pressure of the day-to-day world, she chose the Jamaica Inn. If it's privacy and friendly service you seek, you'd be well-served to do the same.

The year is 1956. Errol Flynn and his gregarious cohorts cackle wildly in the sweet Caribbean air. Onlookers smile at the sight of the actor so relaxed and casual amongst the public. This is what the Jamaica Inn is all about, though.

47 suites and two two-bedroom cottages sit dressed in colonial style, overlooking a private beach. Each is dressed in crisp, white linens, dark wooden furniture, and shades of periwinkle or eggshell. Thankfully, you won't find TVs, Radios, or clocks here. What time is it? What's on? Who cares.

So what do guests do? For starters, lounging on the beach while staff fetch you cool glasses of Planters Punch. Head out into the low waves with a snorkel or sailboat, or head in for a game of croquet or soothing treatment at the KiYara Ocean Spa. For those looking to explore, a wide range of tours are on offer from eco-cycling and equestrian, to polo and golf.

At any time of day, saunter over to the Dining Terrace. Afternoon Tea is particularly lovely, serving delicious little crustless sandwiches.

Cozy hotel suitable for those who don't want to do anything.

Jamaica Inn is a small cozy hotel where staff were friendly and would always ask how you're doing. The large outdoor living room in the Premier Verandah Suite was great for lounging, reading, sea gazing and was just steps away from the croquet lawn and onto the beach. Only issue was the noise of tree frogs at night which disrupted our sleep as the room shutters did nothing in terms of noise prevention. As with all things close to nature, we had many sugar ants crawling around, particularly around the walk-in closet area which could do with some bug spraying.

Food was top-notch: the continental breakfast we had each morning consisted of a selection of fresh fruits and lots of pastries with the banana cake being our favourite. The lunch menu was limited as it was mostly the same as the all-day dining options but food was excellently executed. The BBQ dinner buffet (every Tuesday) was a fun night as it was after the weekly Manager's cocktails (drinking and mingling with other guests) and left our stomachs very satisfied.

The one big fault we found at Jamaica Inn was the high taxi prices to anywhere outside of the hotel. A mere 10min ride to Ocho Rios town will set you back USD20 roundtrip, Dunns River Falls USD70, Sandals Golf Club USD45. At the beginning, it really deterred us from wanting to go try out different restaurants or explore around the area but as it was our honeymoon, we decided not to let that get to us. It seemed like they were trying to trap us into doing everything at the hotel - eating/drinking etc. I would've rather paid a little more for the hotel room and have complimentary shuttle bus service to town.
