All the Trips Film and TV Took Us On In 2021
by Joy PecknoldThere’s always a way to travel. Whenever we can’t do it physically, we do it visually and vicariously. When it comes to whisking us away without ever leaving home, film and television takes the cake. From a sandy Jamaican beach with James Bond to eating carbonara in Italy with Stanley Tucci, we close out 2021 by recounting a few of the most amazing places we traveled to this year via the big screen.

Early into No Time to Die, we see Bond lapping up the retired life from a beachfront property in Jamaica. Those particular white sands and turquoise waters belong to Port Antonio. The film’s crew built Bond’s bungalow from scratch on a private beach, Coco Walk. Quite literally just down the street from it is Geejam which anyone can book into and achieves the very same vibe.

To capture Regency-era London in present day, Netflix’s Bridgerton filmed in Bath, England. Based on Julia Quinn’s novels, the saucy societal series filmed scenes flaunting the exterior of The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa. Erected in the late 1700s, the hotel still retains some Old-World flourishes on the inside too, with poster beds and decadent wallpapers.

The setting for Wes Anderson’s latest The French Dispatch is 1950s Paris. Although he predominately filmed in Angoulême, a small town in western France, the real City of Light is more our style. Speaking of style, just like the one-of-a-kind director, Hôtel Madame Rêve is committed to it. What was a central post office for a century and a half is now an independent hotel that adheres to a rich, golden brown palette of custom and restored furnishings. How very Anderson.

Hacks follows a legendary comedian, Deborah Vance played brilliantly by Jean Smart, as she struggles to stay relevant. Most of the filming was done in LA, but much of the story takes place in Las Vegas where Vance has a residency at the Palmetto Casino. The exterior shots of that fictitious casino are of the real The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino, and its theater has welcomed a long list of iconic performers, including diva Diana Ross and comedian Jeff Foxworthy.

Based on the Liane Moriarty novel, Nine Perfect Strangers follows nine people attending a 10-day health and wellness retreat. While the series was filmed in Australia, Moriarty’s home country, it’s said to be a fictional town in California which looks strikingly similar to Carmel Valley or Big Sur. In the latter, perched above the Pacific, Post Ranch Inn could easily stand-in as Tranquillum House, but leaves all the drama up to its views.

With an all-star ensemble cast, satirical comedy-drama The White Lotus revolves around the lives of staff and guests at a resort in Hawaii and, naturally, it was filmed at one. With its three pools, three restaurants and ocean-facing rooms, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea was the series’ real-life location. Filmed during lockdown, the cast and crew reportedly didn’t leave the hotel during the three months of shooting.

In Netflix’s Resort to Love, Christina Milian plays Erica Wilson, a singer who takes a gig at a luxurious resort in Mauritius to recover from both a breakup and stalled career. What’s known as the Mer de Saphir resort in the movie is really Constance Prince Maurice. The five-star property sits on 60 hectares of lush coastal land with a fish reserve, calm lagoon and white sandy beaches.

Like any conglomerate-owning family, the Roys of HBO’s Succession live a jet set life, but the bulk of their dramas and business dealings go down in the Big Apple. A number of the city’s hotels have been used as a backdrop for their meetings and gala events, including The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, New York. The iconic property has its share of wealthy family names attached to it: oilman J. Paul Getty, who created the world’s wealthiest art institution, once owned it and Australian media heiress Lady Mary Fairfax bought, renovated and sold the 41st, 42nd and 43rd floors in the 1990s.

Covering the Maurizio Gucci and Patrizia Reggiani chapter of the Italian fashion dynasty, Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci features many locales across Italy, but perhaps the most Gucci is Milan, the country’s fashion capital. The climactic hitman scene was filmed in and around Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and here you’ll find Galleria Vik Milano, a hotel with high style to match its location and a Gucci store around the corner.

Filmed in the fall of 2019 and released this year, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy follows the actor tasting his way through the flavorful country. The second episode is dedicated to its capital city, Rome. A 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk from where he feasts on carbonara at Trattorio Pommidoro is NH Collection Palazzo Cinquecento, a hotel set amongst Roman ruins that’s also deliciously close to the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and Roman Forum.
